Manchester United interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy has admitted he had mixed emotions ahead of his side's game at home to Chelsea.

Van Nistelrooy, who has taken temporary charge of the team after Erik ten Hag was sacked, guided United to a 5-2 win against Leicester in the Carabao Cup in midweek.

The former United star will also be in charge against PAOK and Leicester before Ruben Amorim takes over on November 11.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Van Nistelrooy said: 'I said Wednesday it was mixed emotions. We go through a lot with the announcement of the new manager.'

Van Nistelrooy insisted that Sporting Lisbon boss Amorim didn't have any contact with him ahead of the game against Chelsea.

Asked about Amorim, van Nistelrooy said: 'There's no contact about this. It's very clear that I'll be in charge until Sunday next week and after that the new manager will take over. It's clear for players and staff and we can focus on winning these three games.'

Former PSV boss van Nistelrooy had been part of ten Hag's coaching staff before the latter was dismissed.

During his playing career, van Nistelrooy scored 150 goals in 219 appearances for United between 2001 and 2006.

As a player van Nistelrooy won the Premier League, the FA Cup and the League Cup with United.

Frank Lampard claimed that it will be difficult for van Nistelrooy to make many tactical alterations during his short time in charge.

However, Lampard suggested that van Nistelrooy's involvement could serve to help motivate the United squad

Speaking on Sky Sports, Lampard said: 'In a short time frame it's difficult to affect things tactically. The biggest thing is motivation. The players will have a point to prove. If he can the players to run and compete then things can happen.'

Van Nistelrooy and Co were held to a 1-1 draw by Chelsea at Old Trafford, Bruno Fernandes' second half penalty cancelled out by a fine volley from Moises Caicedo.
